Carnation Cup Final
Congratulations to Jeff Reay and Lily-Mae Murfin who won this season's Carnation Cup by defeating Sam Batty and Jerry Collins 3:2 in what was a very closely contested final.
Worksop Masters 2024
The six players, Simon Chatterton, Terry Emmerson, Kerry Harvey, Mark Short, Will Short and George Tacey all qualified for the event by being the top six players in the League who had played in at least 50% of all available League matches.
The preliminary round had players in two groups of three, seeded according to their percentage win rate over the season.
In Group A the first match of the evening set the tone for what was to be an extremely competitive set of matches. Kerry Harvey, seeded 5, played Mark Short, the defending Masters Champion and once again seeded 1. Mark took the first game by a comfortable margin 11:4 but the second and third games were very close and Kerry had opportunities to cause an upset before Mark won through 15:13 and 11:9. In the second game in this group Terry Emmerson played Kerry Harvey. Kerry took the first game 12:10, but Terry fought back and took the next three games to 7, 8 and 8 respectively to set up a group decider against Mark Short. Mark took the firs game comfortably 11:3 but had to come back from being several points adrift to eventually take the second game 13:11. The third game and match was won by Mark 11:7 and this saw him through to the final to defend his title.
In Group B the first match was between the youngest competitor, Will Short, seeded 4 – still only a junior – against Simon Chatterton, seeded 6. This was a match of high quality with both players playing some excellent table tennis. Simon took the first game 11:9 but Will took the next two 4 and 7, respectively. It looked as if Will would go on to clinch the match, but Simon was not giving in easily and fought hard to take the fourth game 12:10. The deciding game saw a reinvigorated Simon take command eventually winning the game and match 11:6. Simon then had to play the number 2 seed, George Tacey. Simon could not repeat the form shown against Will and George took the match in three games, all to 6. This set up an intriguing third match. Both Simon and George had one win each, so Will had to defeat George if he had any hope of progressing further in the competition. Both players were found it difficult to get into their stride in the first two games. Will took the first 11:6, but George hit back taking the second 11:5. In the third game there was some outstanding play by both players, but it was the younger, less experienced Will who took the game 11:8. This was not only a match had to win, but because of the rules for tied wins, he had to do so by winning the fourth game. Great play and drama were the feature of this game with George looking as if he was going to take it easily. However, Will played some outstanding table tennis, held his nerve and eventually took the game 14:12 and with that the match and qualified for the final.
In the final father Mark was too strong on this occasion for son Will taking the match and retaining his title 3:0. However, it will surely not be too long before the tables are turned!
A fantastic evening of table tennis enjoyed by all present. Thanks to all of the players and congratulations to Mark Short, the 2024 Worksop Masters Champion.
